Muskegon fence FAQ

Quick answers on local fence permits and placement, and on how this referral service works. Rule summaries are based on City of Muskegon and Norton Shores public guidance and Michigan law. Always confirm with your zoning office.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Muskegon?

Inside the City of Muskegon, yes. The city requires a development permit before a fence is built. Norton Shores requires a zoning permit for any fence, plus a building permit if it serves as a pool or safety barrier. Townships and other cities set their own rules.

How tall can my front-yard fence be in the City of Muskegon?

Solid fencing can be up to 3 feet. Open fencing, such as chain link, picket, split rail, or wrought iron, can be up to 4 feet if it doesn't block visibility at intersections, alleys, and drives. Behind the front building line, fences can be up to 6 feet.

Can I put privacy slats in a chain link fence?

Not inside the City of Muskegon. The city's fence page says fence screening materials such as woven slats and mesh are prohibited.

Can I put the fence right on the property line?

The City of Muskegon allows fences on the property line, but it's your responsibility to know where the line is. The city notes that only a survey shows the precise location. Fences can't be in the public right-of-way, and the city's brochure says to stay 18 inches back from the sidewalk.

I'm on a corner lot. What's different?

Corner lots in the city have two front building lines, and the 25-foot triangle of vision at the corner and driveways has to stay clear. Since 2018, a 6-foot fence is allowed along the secondary front yard if clear vision is maintained.

I live on the water. Can I fence my yard?

In the City of Muskegon, no fence is allowed within 30 feet of the ordinary high-water mark or running parallel to the water, and fences in waterfront yards max out at 3 feet.

Who calls MISS DIG?

Normally the installer. Michigan law requires a MISS DIG 811 notice at least 72 hours before excavation (excluding non-business days). Augering post holes counts as excavation.

Is this a fence company?

No. Muskegon Fence Quotes is a referral service. We forward your request to one independent installer, who quotes and contracts with you directly. We may be paid by the installer. You never pay us.

How many companies will contact me?

One. We don't sell your request to a list.
